Ernest Hemingway's Writing Studio                    Return to Main House

Ernest Hemingway built a writing studio on the upper floor of a carriage house behind his Key West residence.  The studio was connected to his master bedroom via a second-story walkway bridge.  Around 6:00 a.m., with coffee in hand, he walked across the elevated bridge to his studio, and  wrote until around noon.   'Papa' Hemingway spent his afternoons fishing with friends.  He often spent his evenings at Sloppy Joe's bar a few blocks away.  The Royal portable typewriter used to write the majority of  his works during the 1930's is seen on the table in the center of the room.
