Dear Mom and Dad,

Just a few lines to let you know I am o.k. after the dorm fire. Some Dork was smoking grass and threw a joint down a trash chute when he heard the dorm counselor coming up the hallway. The fire department did a great job. They put out the fire in just over an hour. Nobody got hurt. My room was heavily damaged by smoke and water but all my stuff is o.k. All the kids on my floor have found other places to live including me.

Do you remember Vince, the boy that Dad called the cops to have removed from my sweet-sixteen party? Well he and some friends have an apartment near campus. They invited me to stay with them so I moved in during the week end. We have more than enough room for all twelve of us.

Vince is not actually a student at Catatonic State, he just likes the college atmosphere and hangs out on campus. He plays electric guitar in his own rock band. They perform heavy metal and some other way out stuff in concerts all over. They just did a concert for the inmates at the Vacaville State Pen where his brother is doing time for armed robbery and burglary. Vince and his group aren't much into drugs. Some of the boys do smoke a little grass, but they don't do any really hard stuff.

Now that I have completed my Junior year I am giving serious thought to changing my major. I will probably major in alternate states of consciousness with a psych professor I met recently. I really don't think I want to continue in pre-law. The only reason I started pre-law was because daddy always wanted me to be an attorney like him. If I major in alternate states of consciousness I will spend my senior year at a commune in Arizona. Vince doesn't want me to go to Arizona next year. He is so possessive!

Vince and the boys at our apartment order Pizza all the time and never throw out the old containers. I have to do that every morning before classes or we would be up to our armpits in Pizza boxes.

Do you remember Alicia, one of the cheer leaders in my high school? Well she just broke up with Bernardo a really gorgeous fellow from Columbia. His family is rich, I mean really rich. Besides their home in Bogota they own a beach house on the Pacific side of Costa Rica where the surf is always up. Well, Bernardo started hitting on me as soon as he and Alicia broke up. Bernardo is so, well, how do you say it politely? A sun-drenched surfer hunk. Don't blush Mom. You know what I'm talking about.

Bernardo is trying to get me to spend the summer at his folks place in Costa Rica. His family will be in Europe. It will just be the two of us and some family servants. Vince and Bernardo have already traded punches outside the Tap Room one Saturday night over me. Vince hates Bernardo. Bernardo cuts his hair short and Vince wears a long pony tail like they did when you guys were in college. I'll bet Daddy looked like Vince when you were both young.

Bernardo drives a bright red Mercedes 500 SLC convertible. Anyway, Bernardo really knows how to show a girl a good time. He took me to a restaurant that cost over six hundred dollars for the two of us. What a spread. Then we went to a night club and danced to a Latin band. Bernardo doesn't go to classes anymore. He dropped out after last semester. He says, why bother, he will inherit his dad's business. I think his dad is into some kind of importing business bringing stuff from Bogota to Miami. He has been having some trouble lately with several U. S. government agencies. Bernardo says they are persecuting his dad because he is so successful.

Well Alicia can't stand it now that I have gone out with Bernardo. She thinks that because we are friends that we shouldn't go out with somebody that dumped one of us. If that were true, she couldn't date half the boys on campus and I couldn't date the other half. Well Alicia is going out with a boy I dated in my freshman year. I can't remember his name. I recognized him when he and Alicia crashed at our apartment last night. She said they had to spend the night because her land lady was having her apartment fumigated. She and her friends had burned a lot of incense and smoked a lot of grass. It sure did smell bad. Some friend she is and she doesn't want me to go out with Bernardo.

Do you remember Charlotte from my high school sorority? Well Char is going to spend spring break in Oregon at a week-long seminar studying mental relaxation techniques. She wants me to go with her. I need to make an $800 deposit by next Friday or I can't go. The total cost is $2,400, but I can wait until I get there to pay the rest. The fellow conducting the seminars studied in the Far East. He is such a beautiful man. He has this really long flowing white beard. He spoke on campus several times last semester and the stadium was always full even with tickets costing three hundred bucks apiece. He owns over a dozen Rolls Royces. I can't imagine how he can afford them.

Daddy, Vince and I need some money to get started in a small business he thought up. We are going to make tee shirts for his concerts. We can get a computer and laser printer that makes tee shirt transfers and tons of tee shirts. The whole package costs $5,000 and comes with everything we need. We can clean up. I can probably pay for my Senior year from tee shirt profits alone. Daddy, you know that's a lot less than the $29,000 a year you are paying for my tuition. I can probably pay you and Mom back for my whole college education.  All I need is the $5,000 as soon as you can send it.  I know this is going to work. Thanks Daddy, I know you won't be sorry.

O.K. you guys. Nothing I have written so far is true. None of this happened. None of it is going to happen.  However, I did flunk two courses in my major and will have to repeat them next semester.

Love, Kim
